Vietnam is seeking enhanced support from the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the World Economic Forum (WEF) to bolster its trade and investment landscape, according to calls made by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyễn Văn Thắng. During his recent meetings in Switzerland, Thắng emphasized Vietnam’s dedication to a global trading system that is governed by rules, urging the WTO to expedite reforms, improve its dispute resolution processes, and broaden its scope to cover emerging areas like digital trade, artificial intelligence, climate change, and supply chain resilience.
The Deputy Prime Minister also reiterated Vietnam’s ambition to transition into a high-income economy by the year 2045. He extended an invitation to the WEF to enhance its cooperation with Vietnam by fostering investment, promoting innovation, and developing international financial centers through public-private partnerships.
WTO and WEF officials responded positively to Vietnam’s requests, acknowledging the country’s ongoing economic reforms. They assured continued collaboration on initiatives related to trade, investment, and capacity building, reinforcing their commitment to supporting Vietnam’s economic development goals.
Thắng’s appeal underscores Vietnam’s strategic focus on integrating into the global economy while adapting to new challenges and opportunities presented by technological and environmental changes. The country’s proactive stance in engaging with international organizations highlights its intent to play a significant role in the evolving global economic landscape.
