Thailand’s solar panel imports have seen a significant increase, surging by 88.7% to reach $426.7 million in the first seven months of 2026, according to data from Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce and Customs Department. China overwhelmingly dominated this market, contributing 99.3% of the total imports.

Chinese solar panel imports amounted to $423.9 million, marking a 107.1% rise compared to the same period last year. In stark contrast, Singapore and Hong Kong each accounted for about 0.3% of Thailand’s solar panel import value, highlighting the limited presence of other suppliers in the market.

This notable growth in solar panel imports aligns with Thailand’s preparations for a new household solar installation program. The initiative aims to provide subsidies of approximately THB50,000 per household, initially targeting one million households with prospects to expand to 1.5 million. The program is part of Thailand’s broader strategy to encourage the adoption of rooftop and ground-mounted solar installations.

In addition to boosting imports, the Thai government is exploring measures to enhance domestic solar manufacturing capabilities. Collaborations with the Ministry of Labour are underway to train workers in the assembly, installation, and maintenance of solar panels. Discussions with the Board of Investment also focus on reducing duties on production inputs that are not available domestically, aiming to fortify the local clean-energy supply chain.

Through these efforts, Thailand hopes to not only reduce household electricity costs but also support the development of a robust domestic clean-energy sector. The move represents a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions in the region.
