Speaking at a New York rally, Trump emphasized that the minor increase in fuel costs is a necessary sacrifice to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He also hinted at the possibility of declaring the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime passage for oil transport, as a U.S. territory following a potential victory over Iran.
The situation around the Strait of Hormuz remains tense, with Iran rejecting Trump’s remarks and asserting its control over the waterway. Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, stated that the blockade would continue until the U.S. acknowledges what he terms as its defeat. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also noted that Tehran has not yet decided to engage in new negotiations with Washington, insisting that shipping through the strait will not resume unless Iran’s conditions are met.
The disruption in tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has had significant repercussions, pushing crude oil prices up and increasing pressure on fuel costs globally. The average gasoline price in the United States has climbed to approximately $4.08 per gallon, marking a 29% increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, Brent crude prices are also set for a substantial weekly rise, reflecting the ongoing uncertainties.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has pointed to the U.S. blockade, sanctions, and restrictions on Iranian oil exports as major factors behind the country’s rising inflation.
