In a shift within Europe’s aviation landscape, Istanbul Airport has overtaken Heathrow Airport as the continent’s busiest, having recorded 8.15 million passengers in July compared to Heathrow’s 7.86 million. This change comes as Heathrow experienced a 1.5% drop in passenger numbers from the same month last year, while Istanbul Airport saw a 2.3% increase.
The decline in Heathrow’s traffic has been partly attributed to disruptions associated with the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The situation has intensified calls for the UK government to approve a third runway at Heathrow, which is currently operating its two runways near full capacity. The proposed expansion, estimated to cost £33 billion, aims to boost the airport’s capacity to about 150 million passengers annually.
Heathrow officials have emphasized that these recent figures underscore the importance of expanding capacity to enhance the UK’s global connectivity, trade, and tourism. The airport’s expansion plans aim to address these needs by accommodating more international flights and passengers.
Meanwhile, Istanbul Airport, which commenced operations in 2018, benefits from a larger site and 24-hour operations. It currently has three runways, with a fourth anticipated to open by the end of 2026, positioning it to handle even more traffic in the future.
In contrast, London Stansted and Manchester airports experienced their busiest July on record, with Stansted handling 3.1 million passengers and Manchester 3.4 million. These figures highlight the growing demand for air travel within the UK, despite the challenges facing larger hubs like Heathrow.
